Memorization techniques

Notes based on memoryOS, an app that teaches how to memorize. I highly recommend checking out this app.
Ā
First, make connections
  • Connect an abstract concept to a visualizable object (eg a country to what this country is famous for, eg šŸĀ for Canada, āš½ļø for Brazil)
  • A number can be converted to an object
    • Major system
      0: s or z
      1: t or d or th
      2: n
      3: m
      4: r
      5: l
      6: j ch or sh
      7: k or g
      8: f or v
      9: p or b
E.g. 40 (r,s) can be rose or rice. But don’t use rinse because rinse would be 420 due to the n. Feel free to insert h or w (they are not associated with any number), so 40 can also be horse.
Also note that it’s sound based, not letter based.
    • Dominic system
  • For a long word, or the name of a person or unfamiliar country, connect it with something that sounds similarly, or connect parts of the words with something that sounds similarly
Ā
Next, as we have a list of objects, link them together with one of these:
  • A story
    • Make a story to connect the objects together
  • A linked list
    • Similar to story, but just focus on one object and the next object. The story (or just a visualizable scene) between object 2 and 3 doesn’t need anything to do with the story between object 1 and 2.
  • A number based peg list
    • Give each number an object. Connect each object with an object for a number with a small story/scene.
  • A memory palace šŸ›ļø
    • Choose a room (or a street, a virtual space etc) that you are very familiar with. Go through each notable locations in the room in a specific order, place each object into each location (picture a small story when connecting the object and the location).
  • To remember long numbers, use a grouping system
    • First group numbers in pairs. Each two numbers become a word
    • PAO
      • Group each 3 number pairs together. For the first number pair, use a word that’s a person. For the second pair, use an action (verb). The third, an object. (Eg 012345: 01→Sith, 23→name, 45→roll, picturing a sith is naming a roll of sushi)
      • Some numbers are easier (eg 94 can be pear, bear, boar, pier, beer) and some are harder. Take some time to build your own PAO list using words and characters that you like, and it’s a long (you need 300 words) but fun process.
Ā
To make the memory last, used spaced repetition

Some tips:
  • allow stories to be very far fetched and ridiculous
  • use the same object for the same number digits each time so it becomes muscle memory
