Different types of memory

  • Episodic Memory
    • Also known as: Autobiographical memory, personal memory, event memory
    • Stores memories of personally experienced events and situations
    • Example: Remembering your first day at school or your last birthday celebration
  • Semantic Memory
    • Also known as: Factual memory, conceptual memory, declarative memory (though this includes both semantic and episodic)
    • Stores general knowledge, facts, and concepts about the world
    • Example: Knowing that Paris is the capital of France, or understanding what a democracy is

  • Prospective Memory
    • Also known as: Future memory, intention memory
    • Responsible for remembering to carry out planned actions or intentions
    • Example: Remembering to take medication, buy groceries, or attend a meeting
